My talks

I give talks regularly in Kent and beyond to History Societies, Community Groups, and Year 12 students. They are both informative and engaging. My expertise as a historian focuses on the ‘extremes’ of the twentieth century: communism, Nazism and fascism. I have also an enthusiasm for the history of Kent. Some of the topics are listed on this page, but there are plenty more. I have taught the history of France, the Soviet Union, Germany and research skills at university level.

The Peterloo Massacre (August 1819)

On 16 August 1819,  a peaceful protest in Manchester in support of the extension of the franchise attracted 60,000 people. It was brutally attacked by soldiers leading to deaths and many injuries.  This lecture explains what happened and why, and assesses the extent to which 'Peterloo' provides foundations for modern Britain.

Remembering the Holocaust

Today, the facts are not disputed. Six million perished in the Nazi Genocide. The victims are remembered on Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January) and the events recalled in museums, monuments, films and TV documentaries. But it has not always been so. And deciding how to represent this unimaginable horror involves difficult choices. This talk examines how the memory of the Holocaust has evolved over eighty years – and the difficulties still posed today.
